Vue has the option to use it without a build process through plain JS, in Vue2 the code would have looked something like this:

With Vue 3, the code changes slightly to:

The main difference is that with Vue2, you were able to tell Vue where to mount into by setting the el prop on its root component - each component had to have exactly one main element, so it made sense that the App and its root component were effectively the same thing.

Vue 3 brought a change where a component no longer needs to be just one single HTML Node (with children), and so the mounting process has changed, to where the #app element now belongs to just the app, and the root component's contents are inserted inside that element.

I ran into this by trying to access the HTML Element that the whole thing mounts into, the one with ID app. I'd have code like this, and would try to get to the data-test attribute:

In Vue2, I could simply refer to the whole App's root element through this.$el in the root component. In Vue3 I have to use this.$el.parentElement - because Vue3 now properly separates the app's element and root component's children.

I've been aware of the fix for a while now, but only just understood why it's necessary
